AFGRI Equipment has proudly represented the John Deere agency since 1962, supporting customers across the North-East and South-West regions of South Africa. With a strong branch network locally and internationally, AFGRI Equipment provides professional servicing and maintenance for agricultural equipment, construction and forestry machinery, as well as golf and turf equipment.

Our branch network includes operations across South Africa as well as Botswana, Kenya and Uganda.

As an apprentice, you will receive comprehensive training through a combination of practical workplace experience and theoretical learning via accredited training institutions and technical colleges, including specialised product training facilitated by John Deere and AFGRI Equipment specialists.

Program Details

Training Structure

Throughout the program, apprentices will engage in a structured combination of practical on-the-job training and distance learning facilitated through accredited Technical Colleges or Practical Training Institutes.

Training may include:

  • Attendance at required practical training phases
  • Distance learning modules where applicable
  • Internal technical training facilitated by AFGRI specialists
  • Product-specific training provided by leading equipment suppliers
  • Scheduled Saturday classes may be required

Certification

Successful completion of the program leads to a recognized qualification as a Tractor Technician or Earthmoving Equipment Technician, registered through one of the following Sector Education and Training Authorities (SETA):

  • AgriSETA (Agriculture Sector Education and Training Authority)
  • MerSETA (Manufacturing, Engineering and Related Services SETA)

Both AFGRI Equipment and the apprentice will be formally contracted to the relevant SETA.

Duration

The apprenticeship program runs over a period of 3 years, including a 6-month probation period.

During this time, both the apprentice and AFGRI Equipment can assess suitability for a long-term professional relationship.

The apprenticeship contract may not exceed 4 years. Should the apprentice not qualify within this timeframe, the contract will expire.

Minimum Requirements for Application

Minimum requirements:

  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Proficient communication and administrative skills
  • Basic computer literacy
  • Grade 12 qualification with the following subjects:
    • English
    • Mathematics (NOT Mathematical Literacy)
    • Engineering/Technical Science or Physical Science

The following is advantageous but not necessary:

      • Engineering Graphics and Design
      • Diesel Trade Theory
      • Motor Trade Theory

Equivalent N2 qualifications in relevant technical subjects will also be considered.

Duties of the Apprentice

This includes, but are not limited to:

  • Training toward qualification as a Tractor Mechanic or Earthmoving Equipment Technician
  • Repair and maintenance of agricultural, construction and forestry equipment
  • Stock control and workshop support
  • Customer service and technical assistance
  • General workplace responsibilities within the workshop environment

Contractual Obligations and Training Support

The apprenticeship is subject to a 3-year contractual agreement. If an apprentice withdraws during the apprenticeship or during the work-back period, repayment of training costs may be required based on the stage of withdrawal.

The work-back period is calculated based on the time invested in training.

All required training costs are covered by AFGRI Equipment, provided the apprentice successfully completes each phase.

Should an apprentice fail any subject or training phase, the cost and time required to repeat the training will be the responsibility of the apprentice.

Do I need prior experience to apply?

No prior work experience is required. The program is designed for motivated individuals looking to develop a career in technical equipment maintenance.

Is there an age requirement?

Applicants should typically be:

  • 18 years or older
  • Ideally under 30 years old
  • Currently completing Matric or already qualified

This ensures candidates are at the right stage to commit to the full 3-year apprenticeship and meet legal working age requirements, including holding a valid driver’s license.
