Some machines work hard for a lifetime — and then there are those rare few that also deserve to shine again long after their last job is done. That was exactly the case with a vintage John Deere grader that recently found its way into the hands of The Elite Guys, led by refurbishing expert Arnold Jonker.
With more than two decades of industry experience and a reputation for meticulous craftsmanship, Arnold was the perfect person to bring this piece of John Deere history back to life. What followed was a two‑week transformation that blended heritage, engineering excellence, and heartfelt appreciation for classic machinery.
Meet The Elite Guys: Specialists in Bringing Equipment Back to Life
Arnold Jonker is no stranger to South Africa’s heavy machinery landscape. His company, The Elite Guys, is a well‑respected refurbishing business that services the Yellow Plant and Crane Hire sector. Over the years they’ve collaborated with leading South African OEMs and major plant hire companies — and Arnold’s personal journey spans more than 25 years of hands‑on experience.
His career includes involvement in high‑profile local projects, including Medupi, Kusile, and various wind farm developments. After relocating his business to Brakpan in 2014, Arnold continued to work closely with crane and plant hire operators before entering a new chapter in 2021 — partnering with AFGRI Equipment.
That partnership would eventually lead him to one of his most memorable projects yet.
A Grader with a Story — and an Opportunity
The restoration journey began when AFGRI Equipment Workshop Manager, Brendon Pretorius, showed Arnold a classic John Deere grader recently taken in as a trade‑in. For Arnold, it was love at first sight.
“As a lifelong admirer of classic machinery, I was instantly captivated,” he recalls. “I told Brendon I’d love to be involved — not only to show appreciation for our relationship with AFGRI, but to help preserve a piece of John Deere history.”
And this grader was exactly that — a flagship example of the craftsmanship, reliability, and enduring engineering principles John Deere is known for.
Why This John Deere Grader Matters
Arnold describes the machine as “a tangible reminder of John Deere’s world-class engineering.”
Even after decades of hard work in South African conditions, its structure had held up remarkably well. To him, restoring it wasn’t simply about refurbishing metal parts — it was about celebrating the legacy behind the brand and the countless jobs these machines have powered across generations.
From “’n Boer maak ’n plan” to Original John Deere Glory
Considering its age, the grader arrived in surprisingly good condition. It had clearly been well maintained, though it showed the familiar signs of local ingenuity — that uniquely South African touch where practical fixes keep a machine working long after it should have given up.
Still, to do this project justice, The Elite Guys committed to returning it to full OEM-quality flair.
Over 14 working days, Arnold and his seven‑member team — including a semi‑coded welder, a qualified spray painter, and highly skilled general workers — tackled everything from sanding and stripping to repainting and detailed cosmetic finishing. Mechanically, very little needed changing, which only reinforced the grader’s exceptional longevity.
“Our goal was to make it look like the day it first rolled off the factory floor,” Arnold says.
Challenges of Restoring a Legend
Refurbishing a machine of this age comes with its own set of challenges. Parts are scarce; nothing fits quite the way it used to, and each component demands patience and precision.
The biggest hurdle?
Restoring it within a tight timeframe.
But with resourcefulness, experience, and old‑school craftsmanship, the team delivered — and the results speak for themselves.
Where This Machine Is Headed Now
The freshly restored grader will become a showpiece for AFGRI Equipment, an honor Arnold feels is well deserved.
“It’s a symbol of John Deere’s enduring quality and AFGRI’s commitment to preserving that heritage.”
Visitors will be able to see firsthand the durability of decades-old engineering and the artistry of a carefully executed restoration.
A Project Filled with Pride
For Arnold, this revamp was deeply personal.
“This project made me proud to be part of AFGRI Equipment. To bring this machine back to life — and make sure it stands out above the rest — that’s something special.”
The restored grader tells a story: that John Deere machines are built not just to last, but to be revived, appreciated, and celebrated long after their working days are over.
Would He Do It Again?
In Arnold’s own words:
“Absolutely, yes! As my company slogan says, ‘We Do It Big.’ Every late night, every bolt, every brushstroke — it was all worth it. Restoring John Deere heritage is something I’d gladly do again.”
A Tribute to Craftsmanship, History, and Heart
The grader’s transformation is more than a refurbishment — it’s a testament to:
- John Deere’s engineering excellence
- AFGRI Equipment’s commitment to heritage
- The Elite Guys’ unmatched skill and passion
And above all, it highlights how classic machines, when treated with respect and expertise, can shine just as proudly today as they did decades ago.
